Pancakes and why we eat them on Shrove Tuesday

Shrove Tuesday is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Lent is a period of fasting over the 40 days leading up to Easter. On Shrove Tuesday Christians would go to confession and were “shriven” or absolved from their sins.
Shrove Tuesday was then the last opportunity to use up eggs, butter and fat to avoid temptation over the duration of fasting and pancakes were the perfect way of using up these ingredients.
Today we all enjoy a wide range of recipes, however the secret to truly amazing pancakes is the ingredients.
At the Newlands kitchen, we only use the highest quality, local produce.
For our pancake recipe we will be using the finest free-range eggs from Billy’s Eggs up the road at Kiln Ban Farm.
Our milk and butter come from Bentleys Dairy and the finest artisan flour is milled a stone’s throw away in Chipping Norton by Matthews Cotswold Flour.

Our Head Chef Lesley’s simple recipe using the finest ingredients will ensure you enjoy the perfect sweet pancake.
100g plain flour
1 tbsp caster sugar
20g melted butter
300ml semi-skimmed milk
2 eggs

Enjoy!
